What Are Fibroids
Fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the walls of the uterus. While they are almost always benign, if left untreated, they can grow in both size and number causing severe cramping, bleeding, and other debilitating symptoms.
Dr. Mikhail C.S.S. Higgins, the Bahamas’ first board-certified, fellowship-trained Interventional Radiologist, spearheads the Bahamas Fibroid & Interventional Clinic at Family Medicine Center. He founded a clinic specifically for educating and treating women suffering from fibroids, introducing minimally invasive uterine artery embolization (UAE) as a better alternative to major surgery.
“My goal is to serve people through my skill set, and one of a variety of conditions I treat that happens to be an epidemic in The Bahamas,” said Dr. Higgins.
Benefits of Uterine Artery Embolization
• Uterus saving procedure
• Effective for large and multiple fibroids
• Recurrence of treated fibroids is rare
• Normally performed as an outpatient procedure
• Covered by the majority of insurance companies
