Hear the Difference
What is Audiology?
Audiology is the branch of healthcare focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of hearing and balance disorders.
It plays a vital role in communication health and quality of life, especially as we age or experience ear-related issues.
Audiology care is delivered by our licensed audiologists, who specialize in hearing and balance.
Common conditions treated in audiology include:
- Hearing Loss: A partial or total inability to hear, which can be caused by aging (presbycusis), noise exposure, genetics, infections, or injury.
- Tinnitus: The perception of sound (ringing, buzzing, hissing, or humming) in the absence of an external source. Tinnitus can be constant or intermittent and is often linked to hearing loss or noise exposure.
- Earwax Blockages: Excessive or hardened earwax that blocks the ear canal and may cause temporary hearing loss, discomfort, or a plugged-ear sensation. Easily treated with removal or irrigation.
- Balance Disorders & Vertigo: Conditions affecting the inner ear (vestibular system) that cause dizziness, unsteadiness, or spinning sensations (vertigo). Common causes include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease, and vestibular neuritis.
- Middle Ear Infections: Infections or fluid buildup behind the eardrum, often affecting children. Symptoms can include ear pain, fever, temporary hearing loss, or balance issues.
- Auditory Processing Disorder: A condition where the brain has difficulty interpreting sounds correctly, especially in noisy environments. Common in children, APD affects how the brain processes the sounds it receives from the ears.
- Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: Permanent hearing loss caused by prolonged or sudden exposure to loud sounds—common among musicians, construction workers, and frequent headphone users.
- Hearing Aid Management & Fitting: Audiologists assess hearing loss and fit patients with hearing aids, programming and adjusting them to match individual hearing needs and comfort levels.
