Taking the First Step
Many people feel nervous before their first Memory Clinic appointment. This is completely normal.
The purpose of the visit is to better understand your concerns, answer questions, and determine whether further evaluation or treatment may be helpful.
Discussing Your Concerns
Your healthcare provider will ask about the memory or thinking changes that have been noticed.
You may be asked when symptoms began, whether they have changed over time, and how they affect daily activities. Family members or caregivers are often encouraged to share their observations as well.
Reviewing Medical History
Memory can be affected by many different factors. Your healthcare provider will review your medical history, medications, and any existing health conditions that may influence memory or cognitive function.
Information about sleep, mood, hearing, vision, and overall health may also be discussed.
Cognitive Assessment
A Memory Clinic visit may include simple tests that evaluate memory, attention, language, problem-solving, and other thinking skills.
These assessments are not something to fear. They simply help your healthcare provider better understand how the brain is functioning.
Additional Testing
Depending on your situation, additional testing may be recommended.
This could include blood tests, imaging studies, or referrals for further evaluation. Not every patient will require additional testing.
Developing a Care Plan
After the evaluation, your healthcare provider will discuss the findings and recommend next steps.
This may include lifestyle recommendations, treatment options, additional testing, follow-up appointments, or support services for patients and caregivers.
